Wider Curriculum
Pupils within the Resourced Provision have access to a wide range of activities and experiences to support their wider development. KS2 pupils are taught to play a brass instrument during a weekly lesson provide by Bradford’s Music and Arts Service. All pupils participate in a weekly signing choir. Pupils also participate in a range of sporting events and activities, both within and outside of the school setting. These offer pupils the opportunity to meet deaf peers and develop their physical, as well as social skills. Pupils take part in events such as music workshops and drama events both within and outside school.
Julie Beckett (Deaf Vet Nurse) visits Girlington
Julie Beckett, a Deaf Veterinary Nurse visited our school. Pupils from Swain House and Hanson School also joined us for her presentation. Julie shared her experiences of life and work as a veterinary nurse, explaining how she cares for animals and supports vets in their daily practice. She also set up hands‑on activities designed especially for deaf children, giving them the chance to role‑play as vet nurses. Pupils practiced looking after animals, carrying out mock operations, and even learnt how to use bandages and give injections.

Brass Lessons
As part of ‘Music and the Deaf’ provision in Bradford, our pupils benefit from weekly music sessions where they are learning to play a variety of brass instruments. A qualified music teacher, Mr Fields, visits every week to teach the lessons. These are accessed by all of our deaf pupils, even the most profoundly deaf, because of the low, loud sounds which the instruments make and also because of the vibrations which accompany the sound. Pupils are making excellent progress and thoroughly enjoy the sessions.

Signing Choir
The Resourced Provision pupils attend a weekly signing choir run by a visiting peripatetic music teacher. They learn to sing and sign a variety of pop songs such as those by Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry and The Beatles. This has also lead to performances at Bradford Cathedral and as part of the Love Bradford Day, where they performed the poem ‘Lark Ascending’ whilst accompanied by Bradford Youth Orchestra. Recently they performed at the Christmas Fayre at the BRI. Girlington Signing Choir are slowly building a reputation for their fantastic performances and there are more in the pipeline!
