Sign Language Week

This year Sign Language Week is on March 16th to March 22nd.  Sign Language Week is an awareness week for British Sign Language (BSL).

Sign Language Week is celebrated every year in March to remember the first time BSL was acknowledged as a language in its own right by the UK Government on 18th March 2003.  It aims to celebrate and educate about BSL and to encourage more people to start learning it and preserve BSL for future generations.

BSL is the preferred language of over 87,000 Deaf people in the UK for whom English may be a second or third language.

BSL helps to build a sense of community and belonging for Deaf people and highlights Deaf culture and identity.

All children participated in BSL activities and they had great fun joining in with signing with their deaf peers.  Here are some of the activities pupils at Girlington have been carrying out during Sign Language Week.

Reception
Years 5 and 6 RP pupils went over to Reception and taught them BSL signs for colours, animals and transport.  The RP pupils were great at teaching the signs and the Reception children really enjoyed learning the signs.

Cupcake Sale
The Resourced provision arranged a blue cupcake sale for Sign Language Week where all children had the opportunity to bring in £1 for cupcakes during playtime.  Lots of children were very excited about cupcakes and they all helped raise £400 for charity.  In addition to this, all children and staff were invited to wear blue for a £1 on one of the days.  Well done and thank you to everyone who helped raise some money for charity.

The RP pupils were involved in BSL workshops in their classrooms.  They all thoroughly enjoyed being teachers and taught the children in their classrooms many things such as the BSL alphabet, signs for animals and different types of transport.
